• What system/software are you using to access this BBS?

From Kdawg to All on Monday, December 13, 2021 19:24:38
    Hello everyone!

I thought it would be fun to see how everyone is accessing this BBS.

I'm currently using a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ running Buster Raspian WITHOUT a X server. Command line only. (Gotta get a little street cred for that). Oh and an old Dell VGA monitor (more street cred maybe?) Then I use good ol' telnet.

At work I use SyncTerm on Windows 10 for the rare times I'm slow.

    What about you?

    My work blocks telnet/ssh/rlogin

So, I use the web ftelnet client quite a bit.

Sounds like your I.T. department is more on top of it than mine.
So I'm a fellow ham out of Indiana. What type of operatoring do you like to do?

Oh, they are so on top of it it's hard to do my job sometimes.

Honestly, I like phone "contesting" on HF the most(but I do some digital ops too), but I wouldn't decribe my modest gear as a contest station by any means. I love field day because it's the biggest contest (even though they claim it's not) :)

Oh I bet you got some decent gear. I'm just using a Baofeng BF-F8HP. Got a nice 2 meter
J-pole "Slim Jim" at the house that helps. The plan is to step up a bit to Icom 2300H
after the holidays. What kind of HF rig do you have?

My son has a F8HP (I have an older UV-5R). It's a really good radio, and it's amazing to me that like 10 years ago a HT with that many features would have easily cost >$500.

My HF rig is Yaesu FTdx-3000 that I bought used a few years back. I have an 130ft end feed Dipole that I use for the antenna. It's a nice radio, and I do really enjoy it, but I have to say the new SDR radios (like the IC-7300) are really amazing and one of these days when I have more time/money to play radio I would like to upgrade.

Time and Money...that's the name of the game. I just looked up the FTDX-3000 and looks like a nice radio. And I agree about the HT's now a days. I was impressed with all I could do with a $60-ish radio. A good starter radio for sure. However, there is a simplex group in my area that I want to be able to contact easily from my house (at least one member). Right now I use the Baofeng, mag mount antenna, and take a little drive down the road. So that is why I set my sights on the Icom 2300H. 65 Watts hopefully gets through the noise. Would you have any tips?

For simplex especially just the extra power will make a huge difference. If you do a perminant antenna that you can roof mount that makes a big difference too (and many antennas are only rated for 50 watts, so you might want to take a look at that anyway). I know people have an adversion to drilling holes in their cars many times, but they just work a lot better because they get the whole car as a ground plane. But, if you are doing OK with 8 watts, 65 watts with the mag mount will still be an amazing difference.

Thanks for the info. That makes me feel better about buying the Icom here soon. My current car has a sun roof. Would I still get good results if I mounted on the trunk? Also what happens to a 50 watt rated antenna if you use 65 watts of power? By the way I hope you had a good holiday.

I had a great holiday, thanks!

Trunk mount - yes, it's fine and to underscore I've seen a demo where a guy mounts an antenna in the middle of a cookie sheet to show how much better just that is than a mag mount. Trunk-lip mounts are pretty common too, but I've never tried one.

Running 65 watts into a 50 watt antenna - my gut tells me it would probably be OK, at least for a little while. But, it is 30% more power than it's rated for, however the engineers almost certainly gave it a certain amount of cushion and the finals in the radio have a certain amount of cushion. I wouldn't do it as a perminant solution. Plenty of mobile anennas are rated for 75 watts. Just my 2 cents...

Trunk Lip mount...I've seen those on the road and watch a good video on YouTube by KB9VBR. Now that you say that it does make since you would get better preformance from a "metal to metal" mount. The cookie sheet demo made it click in my head.

That was good information about to much power going into an antenna. Makes sense their would be cushion on both sides...the antenna and radio. I'm not planning on blasting 65 watts into an antenna rated for 50 watts. I was just wondering what would physically happen to the equipment. Would the antenna eventually start melting? Would the circuitry in the radio get damaged over time?

My understanding is it damages the final transmit transistors (AKA "the finals") in the radio. I can't imagine there are components in the antenna that would get hurt. Again, my gut tells me you would be within tolerances or close enough that it would take a very long time to hurt anything.

Alright, well thank you for the info. Just so you know I went ahead and bought the Icom 2300H. They had it $30 dollars off for a holiday sale. I'm excited about that. Anyway I hope you have a happy New Year!

Awesome! It looks like a really great radio. I've never had an Icom, but I really like their gear.

    Happy New Year!

I'm using Netrunner to access it.. I do use SyncTerm also for connecting to CBM CG boards.. I find that I am not a fan of the font of SyncTerm when it comes to connecting with PC boards.. Go figure?!?!
