• "Power Rangers" ??? Seems No Way To Block This Person

From 56g.1173@3:770/3 to All on Monday, December 11, 2023 01:15:09
CSRPi has been infested with this bullshit for at
least a month now. Constantly-changing addresses,
identities, orgs ... no good way to block 'em unless
you're writing your own NNTP apps and even then it'd
    be a lot of work.

Usenet ain't what it used to be. Indeed it's just BARELY
hanging on. Goog thinks it OWNS Usenet. Most ISPs no
longer provide it because of "liability" issues for
    free speech/ideas/(and PORN).

On the plus, Usenet is almost "underground" now, so
"crude" that few use it or even know it exists. It
also has the advantage of being UN-owned, despite
what Goog may think. It's just a service on an
    old port.

Hey, somewhere ... DO implement open NNTP with most
every group imaginable .... and preferably on
multiple PORTS so ISPs can't easily block it. It's
    not a money maker ... it's a "freedom" thing ...
which is now more important than most realize,
esp if your freedom has been recently snatched
away by the latest Fearless Leader.

Hey, as the spammer said, it's the Battle For
    The Grid :-)

First I've heard of it - cleanfeed must be suppressing it at E-S.

I see Google Groups has got even more irritating.

In the past, I would view Usenet in Google Groups to see if E-S or my
killfile were being over enthusiastic. Now Google Groups have disabled
"Show original message" so I can't see what the message headers are, or
why they might have offended my killfile.

It's a shame how many users have been driven away from so many
newsgroups (including my favourite, alt.folklore.computers) by
these yahoos. It appears that CSRPi has become home for a.f.c

This even allows legitimate Google vict^H^H^H^Husers at gmail.com

Sounds like the Google Groups spam has reached here then. For
    background see news.admin.net-abuse.usenet.

You're using Thunderbird, and I believe many other Thunderbird
users have killfiled all posts originating from Google Groups as a
solution, but perhaps that's not what you'd call a "good way to

Many news servers have also started implementing spam filtering,

Yea, semi-useful ... but, as said, also at a PRICE.

You can PAY for what's supposed to be free, but bear
in mind that paying TAGS you, so political harpies
can later persecute/prosecute you for thought crimes ...

What's NEEDED are more servers, pref in countries kinda
off the map. Also needed, more alternate ports to thwart
blocking. Yea, you can do it as web pages, but they're
    computationally/bandwidth expensive compared to NNTP.

Hmm, maybe Musk could fork over some pocket-change ... ???
Seems to be the only Important Person who "gets it"
relative to free-speech/ideas anymore. Hell, even

you appear to be using thunderbird (even though it's an old version, all
    of the following should apply)

create a new address book, e.g. called "googlegroups-whitelist", add all
the good authors email addrs to it

create a message new filter e.g. called "selective-googlegroups" at the
top level of your news server (giganews? earthlink?) with the following

    match ALL of the following

    message-id: CONTAINS @googlegroups.com

from: ISN'T IN addr book googlegroups-whitelist

    and actions of

    mark as READ
    tag message as #6

if you don't see message-id: in the list of fields, click customise...
    and add it

you may already use tag #6 for other purposes, adjust accordingly, or
don't bother tagging, I tag them as find it helpful to see how the
    filters are performing.

You need a news service provider with better spam filtering. I can’t
promise “no spam” but it’s possible to kill a lot of it with
    responsively maintained filter.

Usenet ain't what it used to be. Indeed it's just BARELY hanging

AIUI part of the issue is that institutionally speaking, Google has
    essentially forgotten about it.

I’m not ready to block Google locally; it’s a major source of legitimate user as well as spam. But when I look at my logs I do see where the

in legitimate messages, whether they're from a Google user
    or not.

Fore some reason injection info didnt work on thunderbird, but message
    ID contains googlegroups did IIRC.

The advantage with filtering based on the message-id: header is that
it's always included in the OVERVIEW.FMT set of headers returned by the
LIST and OVER NNTP commands, so the client doesn't have to issue extra
commands to (try) and retrieve additional headers that may, or may not,
    be present ...

Note that, maybe deliberately, there are a lot FEWER
ways to post. Almost all ISPs have dropped usenet
because there might be some 'naughty' content. The
remaining free providers often offer few groups, and
will themselves censor groups they have political
disagreement with. You can still PAY for access from
a dedicated provider - but then you set yourself up
for doxxing/retaliation to a greater degree.

So, on the whole, not good.

Dedication to free-speech/expression is hard to find
in the modern world. Despite its semi-obscure status
usenet/free-exchange is seen as a 'threat' by many.

One POSSIBLE hope ... Elon Musk. He really does seem to
"get it" relative to free speech. If prompted, he could
very quietly add a usenet feed to his stuff - preferably
almost entirely undocumented. The bandwidth would be
    utterly insignificant.

Another important bit for the future ... offer usenet
on multiple PORTS, not just the standard. This would
make it harder for ISPs to just cut out the NNTP port
entirely. Some ISPs cut out 'insecure' mail ports
already, they can easily add more and expect the
    current pols to encourage that.

I am going to craft a letter and attempt to get it
to Musk (though he DOES have a lot on his table).
Maybe he'll get it, maybe not, but at least there
would be an ATTEMPT. Doing nothing GETS you nothing.
