Once there's a *FULL* new release, yes it will.

Please bear in mind, that at the moment, Tim is releasing BETA TEST *executables* ONLY.

What is the best way to proceed with an updated install?

    [1] Backup(export) the following registry key ..... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\New.Vision.Software\WinPoint

    [2] Backup everything in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\WinPoint

    [3] Download this: http:\\winpoint\org\wp_v375.zip

[4] Extract the executable and copy it into the same directory as your
    existing WinPoint(359.1) executable.

[5] Create a shortcut to the new executable and away ya go :)

Will the existing config values (areas, passwords, etc..) carry over?

Yes, or at least, mine did.

    NOTES:
"Extras -> Options" has been moved to "File -> Options". In fact, the "Extras" menu no longer exists.

    Regards,
    Martin

As Tim has now pulled the old 359.1 version from his site and replaced it with the current public beta release, most of the WinPoint "PROS and CONS" are now obsolete, as is my "Basic Installation Guide". I've pulled the guide from my site but whether I write a new one, remains to be seen. I obviously leave it up to your good judgement as to what you do with your "PROS and CONS" chart on your site.

So.. should 359.1 be considered "decomissioned"? ..and never to

program since they really go well together.

However, I am full supporter of avoiding programs that have
operational issues and limitations that interfere with a
    pleasant consistent experience.

..but whether I write a new one, remains to be seen.

Isn't the install and the initial step-by-step process about
    the same?

I obviously leave it up to your good judgement as to what
you do with your "PROS and CONS" chart on your site.

Maybe I can simply create a link to the CONS for 359.1 to point
to a subpage or something. Meanwhile, the main table could be
populated with pending CONS for the latest version?

As far as the install goes, it's pretty much the same as it was in 359.1 but some of the wording has changed slightly. However, the initial step-by-step process has changed *dramatically*.

when I remember how I created that page!

    OK, here we go :-)

[CONS] The following can be safely removed: -------------------------------------------

    - internal editor: ^Y deletes UNDER the current line.

    - limited to no extended-ascii support

    - does not support incoming areafix lists that are in lowercase [*3]

    - sometimes areafix is created for "0:8/15" address.

    - received nodelists need manual intervention to \WinpointNL directory

    - if you don't specify a domain, WinPoint adds "@" to the end of your AKA [*4]

    - when forwarding a post to another echo/area, the Extra/Options/
Templates for the defined header/footer do not get inserted into the new message.

    - when replying to a message (echo or netmail) templates (headers/footers)
    do not get applied.

    - reply window opens up full screen [*5]

    - when message sort order is last "set" by Received date or Sent date and newest to oldest, the program will always resort by oldest to newest the
next time the program is run.

    - when message sort order is last "set" by Bytes and largest to smallest,
the program will always resort by smallest to largest the next time the program is run.

Footnotes 3,4 and 5 can also be safely removed.

[CONS] I'm unsure about the following:
    --------------------------------------

    - no highlighting on a search match

    - editor on reply removes <CR>'s on a line by line basis; therefore
ordered lists/lines/columnar text in incoming messages become reflowed paragraphs.

And there you have it :-)

The [PROS] section also needs a bit of attention but I'll post my thoughts
    in a separate message.

[CONS] I'm unsure about the following: --------------------------------------

    - no highlighting on a search match

Still the case. Particularly since the search function mach have multiple matches in the same mail, this would require a mechanism to highligh multiple places in a message, that currently doesn exist.

    - editor on reply removes <CR>'s on a line by line basis; therefore ordered lists/lines/columnar text in incoming messages become reflowed paragraphs.

This should be largely adressed by the more intelligent reflow behavior introduced recently in WP. Also, this can be disabled per area.

    Tim

Yes, that's worthy of a place in the "[PROS]" column and that's just
prompted me for something else that may be a worthy candidate .....

    - charset can be displayed against each message in the message list

OK and many thanks for clarifying that.

Methinks that just about wraps it up for now, unless anyone else has
anything they think needs adding or removing. At the end of the day, it's entirely up to August's good judgement as to what to do. After all, it's
his comparison chart, not mine :-)

The [PROS] section also needs a bit of attention but I'll post my
    thoughts in a separate message.

    Here we go .....

    "[PROS]"

    Correction:
    -----------
    - font size, font colours, background colours customizable in the message reader and in the message editor

    Additions:
    ----------
    - fully automatic and/or manual processing of nodelist/pointlist update files

    - integrated hatch manager

    - comprehensive codepage support

    - support from the developer in the WINPOINT echo

Regarding codepage support, perhaps a footnote listing all supported codepages would be in order.

    Currently supported codepages are: IBMPC, CP850, CP852, CP866, CP895, CP1250, CP1251, CP1252, CP10000, ISO-8859-1, ISO-8859-2, UTF-8

Here's another one for the "[PROS]" section .....

    - supports IPv6

    Martin

Yes.. I read about that one. So, it's fairly simple to implement. Perhaps OpenXP could have that consideration too! :D

Apoint is definately one to drop for all intents and purposes, I guess.

Not being a programmer, I couldn't really comment about its implementation.

Gunter implemented IPv6 for POP3, SMTP and NNTP a long time ago but for some unknown reason, he didn't implement it for Fido-over-IP ??

Apoint is definately one to drop for all intents and purposes, I guess.

Nope, I have to disagree on the following grounds .....
    - its message marking system is absolutely magnificent
    - it fully supports styled text
    - it still supports POTS
    - it includes email and news clients(dial-up)

Hmmmm, from what's been going on elsewhere over the last few days, it would seem that it's far from fairly simple to implement.

Nope, the discussion about WPs IPv6 handling is totally misleading. It works,is correct and needs no improvement. Period. Any suggestion that current state is flawed, non-standard or whatever is simply wrong. The rest of the discussion is partially even beyond academic.
