• Netmail Routing

From Tom Moore@1:135/205 to All on Monday, December 09, 2024 11:34:03
In today's use of dns is the process of using node lists for netmail routing still important or is this just something maintained for older systems who do not support this?
Are all nodes registered with the Fidonet dns system or is this a best effort practice?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Not all nodes are Internet-connected or using BinkP.

No, not all nodes are. I imagine that whatever parses the node list to create that domain zone file is using nodelist flags to filter-in which nodes should be included in the zone.

    Yes,
I asked because as I understand it Fidonet has been completely converted to internet based bbs's where dns is how systems find each other.
If this is not the case in all situations then I understand why the nodelist is still used.

    Oh, I see.
I didn't know that there were still some systems connecting over dial-up or other methods to send messages that are not internet based.

DNS has absolutely nothing to do with the nodelist.

Some FTN nodes use Internet-based methods that are not BinkP (e.g. EMSI/FTS-1/FTS-6 over Telnet). They might still have a corresponding binkp.net hostname, but I'm guessing only if they support BinkP as well.

DNS has absolutely nothing to do with the nodelist.

Well, it kind of does since the FidoNet nodelist (at least zones 1 and 2's) is used to populate the DNS zone file for the binkp.net domain:

    $ host f426.n229.z1.binkp.net
f426.n229.z1.binkp.net is an alias for bbs.darkrealms.ca.
    bbs.darkrealms.ca has address 142.112.73.114

^^ That's a DNS query that only works because of the contents of the nodelist. --- SBBSecho 3.23-Linux

In one prospective this is true.
Based on my lack of experience with how Netmail really works I thought that dns was always used by mailers as a fall back if the nodelist wasn't available, or if a 1:ALL hub wasn't in the routing table.
I wasn't aware that BinkP's use of dns was an extra feature that isn't required and is offered as a solution to not having a nodelist present and is not offered by all mailers.

You really need to review Fido Policy, all of what you are asking is there, and even between the lines. Some people hate it but it actually articulates very clearly that what you are asking.

Fido is what it is. It piggybacks off the Internet but the two are mutually exclusive in the end.
