Lemme guess, you just defined the XLATEXPORT as UTF-8 and call it a day, right? Sure, that is how utf8 was originally designed. If you type in characters <127 then you are safe within LATIN-1, ISO.. CP437,.. utf8, you name it. Which is a pretty boring test you did without putting any accent chars at least.

You should know by now that not all software inserts a CHRS kludge.

This is how fucked up this looks at my screen http://pics.rsh.ru/img/Screenshot_jgdwebzj.png

Try using 'xlatimport cp437'. In my experience, 99.9% of messages that do not contain a CHRS kludge are cp437, so just tell Golded to assume it. ;)

I didn't say anything about most messages. I specifically said "messages that do not contain a CHRS kludge are cp437," because they are usually posted from a BBS software that displays ANSI graphics and don't care about any other charsets.

Nice try, though. Your attempt at sarcasm is duly noted. ;)

It might be a good idea to use CP437 as a default in case a CHRS kludge is missing (albeit FTS-5003.001 says ASCII), as that is what most software used back in the day.

I'm sure others will correct you too, but ASCII is *not* AKA CP437.

ASCII (AKA US-ASCII) only defines code values 0-127 while CP437 (like most other code pages) is a full 8-bit code page, defining code value 0-255 (so-called "extended ASCII").
