devoid of interesting chatter. What kind of newsletter would

There are currently 4 active systems that post an echo area list. 2 Post only about the active echo's on their system. 2 Others post a complete list of all echo areas on their system. 1 Of those also posts a Top 10 list in the same message. And nothing much has changed in the last couple of years, so I think you remember it wrong...

So I think all the information you want is there, but maybe not in the form you were used to by Janis.
And Janis's was a big system, with most areas (which probably were mostly empty for a big part of them)...

Granted, the stats of some of the echos are highly skewed with
the repetative auto-posts with rules and stuff. However, it is
good to have something to indicate that some life in them
exists and that someone has an eye on them.

Some echoes have lots of messages but are completely devoid of any interesting content while others have only a few posts but can be very interesting.

I suppose it's a lot like tuning into a ham-radio channel and
hope that someone is there to have a chat.

The ELIST provides a healthy list of FTN echos. People simply
need to contribute to the ones that they are interested to see
spring with more life.

There is one rather long stats list with quite a few echos.
It's not too bad to work with.

So I think all the information you want is there, but
maybe not in the form you were used to by Janis. And

Echos are a chicken'n'egg situation. New users would most
likely like to see what's in them (even if there hasn't been
much stats activity in them) in order to determine viability of participation. But if an echo has none, then it can easily be
skipped and ignored. But thankfully, %RESCAN can prove useful.

I always felt that Word of mouth is best... its what makes things a bit more fun, that cooperative-anarchy. Anyone can start something and almost immediately find others to pick it up without any formal regimented process.
