Quoting Shaun Buzza to Sean Dennis <=-

Take it from a Canuck: Free healthcare is worth exactly what
you pay for: nothing! Unless you're actually dying,
    immediately, nobody cares!

    Hi Shaun,

I hate to argue with a guy on my very first post with him but my own
experience has been quite different. You appear to be in Ottawa. I
spent the first 24 years of my life in Ottawa (and Cobden, Kingston
and Kirkland Lake). Unless things have fallen apart in Ontario since
then the system was pretty good. I was never severely ill there but
have been injured twice and was taken care of very quickly and well.
After a few years in Alberta I've lived in Yellowknife for the past
43 years and the level of service here is most excellent.

Sure, there is a wait list for elective things like an ex-athlete
getting knee surgery. My buddy waited a year for his new knees and
he only gets free replacements every 15 years. But when my wife,
whose family has a history of breast cancer and she had already had
two bouts of thyroid cancer, noticed a mysterious lump she saw her
family doctor within 2 days who referred her to an oncologist in
3 days who sent her to the world class Cross Institute in Edmonton
in 3 days where she was operated on 48 hours later. Neither one of us
had time to get scared! And the total cost including travel expenses
    to Edmonton were zero.

During Covid I was asked to postpone an annual physical (I only go
every two years anyway) unless I had something worrisome to check
out. A week later a nurse practitioner who was on my doctor's team
phoned me to say that she had reviewed my records and that even if I
skipped a full checkup I should pop into the lab for a PSA. She also
added that I should not expect a follows phone call if the numbers
were good as my doctor was streamlining things as half his hours
were dedicated to Covid. My wife on the other hand has four ongoing
issues including diabetes that do need monitoring and she has not
missed a single scheduled appointment these past two years.

    We certainly have no complaints.

As this is supposed to be a food and recipe forum I'm going to tack
    on a recipe next ...

This was snagged from another forum I'm active in:

    MMMMM-----Meal-Master - formatted by MMCONV 2.10

Title: Atomic Frog Balls And Pickled Garlic Scapes
    Categories: Native, Canadian, Pickles, Vegetables
    Servings: 12

    4 lb brussels sprouts, cleaned
    3 1/2 c apple cider vinegar
    3 1/2 c water
    1/4 c sea salt, non-iodized
    pickling salt
    2 TB sugar
    1 TB coriander seeds
    1 TB cumin seeds,
    1 1/2 ts celery seed
    12 dried chilies
    24 clove garlic

Heat vinegar, water, salt, and sugar until the salt and sugar are
completely dissolved. Mix the spices together to form your own
pickling spice blend. Cut Brussels sprouts in half if large or leave
whole, if desired. Place in jars, but do not squash in too tight.
Add 1 chili pepper, 1 to 2 cloves of garlic, and 1/3 - 1/2 tsp
pickling spice blend per jar. Pour vinegar mixture over sprouts to
1/2 inch from top. Wipe rim and put lids on finger tight. Place jars
in boiling water bath. Boil for 10 minutes, take out jars- tighten
lids and cool on wire rack or on a towel.

    Cook's Notes:

For a sweeter version, simply add 1 - 2 cups sugar to the pickling
    brine.

This recipe also works for pickling other vegetables, like
cucumbers, garlic scapes, green beans, cauliflower, zucchini, and
cherry tomatoes, either ripe or green.

    Hi Shaun,

I hate to argue with a guy on my very first post with him but my own experience has been quite different. You appear to be in Ottawa.

I would appear to be, because it is the nearest major city. I actually live in a town of about 10k population. I can assure you, our experiences would be quite different indeed.

There is a severe shortage of family doctors in my town, and as a result, the local hospital is forced to pick up the slack. This has caused the average wait time in the ER to exceed eight hours.

Unless things have fallen apart in Ontario since then the system was JW> pretty good. I was never severely ill there but have been injured twice JW> and was taken care of very quickly and well.

I cannot speak for the entire province, but certainly the local 'system' has degraded in the time that I've lived here. And definitely very different than the care I expected from my time in BC. Then again, the bigger the town, the better the healthcare.

I don't consider this arguing, btw. It's not like we're hurling insults. Unfortunately, I did not come with a recipe prepared with which to return to topic. So I shall simply say:

    Have a good day!
