Since you hate gin, I'll save my martini variations for Shawn.
But on a different riff, a little while ago I was out of whisky to
make Manhattans and out of daiquiri fixings for my rum and I was too
lazy to go out so I started experimenting with dark spiced rum and
sweet red vermouth. I buy The Kraken, a black spiced rum from
Trinidad and Tobago. It's premium priced but also premium quality.
I might like it - neat.
I didn't have high hopes for the outcome but I discovered that 2
parts rum and 1 part vermouth with a teaspoon of cherry whisky and a squeeze of lime juice is downright tasty. The addtion of ginger ale converts this short, strong drink into a lovely highball. Now I make
it both ways on purpose as a regular thing. Now I just need to come
up with a snappy name for it. Something with more zing than rum
Manhatttan or Cuban martini.
I'm not much of a drinker. It's been since the picnic at Dale & Gail's
that Glen Jamieson and Joan Macdiarmid attended (over 10 years) that I
had a drink of anything. Just haven't the urge nor taste for it.
I do keep some premium tequila, bourbon, Scotch, etc. on hand for the occasional guest. All of my booze was picked to be sipped "straight up"
w/no mixers. My heirs can do as they wish with the residue when I pass.

Title: Virgin Margarita
Categories: Beverages, Citrus, Mocktail
Yield: 4 drinks
1/2 c Lime juice
1/2 c Lemon juice
1/4 c Superfine sugar
Crushed ice
Club soda (or Squirt)
4 Lime wedges; optional
1 tb Kosher salt; optional
Make the lemon-lime mixture
YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS HERE: on the rocks, or frozen. The
rocks version is the easiest and least time-consuming
way to make a virgin margarita (and, it dirties the
fewest dishes to boot). Simply combine the lime juice,
lemon juice, and sugar in a small pitcher, stirring
until the sugar has dissolved.
For Margaritaville-style frozen drinks, blend the lime
juice, lemon juice and sugar with 4 cups of ice in a
high-powered blender. Blend until the mixture is nice
and slushy.
PREPARE THE GLASSES: For a true margarita experience,
you’ll want to prepare a salted glass. This step is
optional, of course, but it does make the glasses look
fancy. Start by swiping one of the lime wedges around
the rim of the glass. Then, pour some coarse salt onto a
small plate and dip the edge of the glass into the salt,
rolling it around until the edge is coated.
FILL ’EM UP AND ENJOY! Next, fill each glass with the
lemon-lime mixture. If you went with the rocks version,
fill the glasses with about 1-1/3 cups of crushed ice,
first. Top the drink with a splash of club soda and
garnish with a slice of lime, if desired.
