Weisswurst

It was the best of times and the wurst of times...
The best part: Raine, Lexi and Charlee are visiting from Fort McMurray
and they picked up Neekha and young Azlind along the way. He is 16
months old now and already in his Terrible Twos.
It's a working vacation for Raine as she is rebuilding and painting
both our decks and doing other maintenance. We're paying her journey
wages and not expecting a family discount. (She cancelled jobs in
Fort Mac to come here when Yellowknife is short of trades people
and I was having a hard time lining up a contractor and she needs
to pay off a new truck.) The girls have been offered gardening
and landscaping jobs too if they want them but I am unsure how much
time they want to put into that as their social life is tempting
them away.
The wurst part: Loblaws had a sale on PC Weisswurst so we bought 2
double "club" packs. Real Bavarian Weisswurst is made from veal and
a little pork back bacon and spiced with parsley, lemon, mace,
onion, ginger and cardamom. This Canadian version is made with pork
and chicken and very mildly seasoned. The label is vague as to what
spices are actually in it. I thought I tasted white pepper and maybe
a little nutmeg. Still, they were tasty. I boiled them 5 minutes,
then fried them in butter for 5 more shaking the pan to make them
roll around until just starting to brown a bit then served them in
homemade buns with sauerkraut, diced onions and spicy whole grain
mustard. Some of the younger people elected to go with cole slaw
and sweet honey mustard instead. We didn't have any cabbage or
carrots in the house so I grated a kohlrabi and a turnip and
worked with that. It was well received.
Cheers
Jim
... Canned Vienna sausages taste like hot dogs, only nastier.
