I've said this before and suggested torrenting, but it was shot down.

It would be nice if there was a way to network our file bases. I think that would add a lot to the software.

Maybe have it in the file listings like

(filename.zip) (size) (date) (qwk name) (desc)

then if the user chose the file it would be fetched by the bbs and in a temp dir for the user to download from.

it would good to be able set a limit on filesize and virus scan files before the user gets them.

for fetching the files, I'm not sure ftp is the way to go with how some people have issues with passive and active mode.

A shared filebase sounds interesting. I have almost 100GB of files I'd
like to share, but I'm too lazy to sort and categorize them.

Who would manage such a thing?

Some editors (e.g. fseditor.js) support editing the message subject. Synchronet does not allow editors to change the "to: user" of a message.

FTN FDNs (file echoes) are already supported. Sounds like you're proposing more of an as-needed/requested method of file distribution. If you'd really like something like that considered, the proper method for proposing feature requests is via https://gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/-/issues

no, i mean something totally different. those echos aren't even used that much and they're messy.

i mean it's in your file listings but it has a tag that it's on another bbs. bbs1 fetches the file from bbs2 and serves it up.
a whole way for us to network our msg areas seamlessly to the end user.

i'll post it in the requests

    SlyEdit does as well.

Best bet would be a caching layer in front of IPFS on the local BBS...

    https://ipfs.io/

Indexes and updates could be "published" through a coordination server
via a regular web interface, and BBSes could download/cache subscribed directories.

As to FTP, I think that being able to deliver over HTTP/HTTPS is far
less problematic for users at this point. Many terminals even support
opening links which would make it even easier for telnet/ssh users.

If the system is open-source, then different "networks" could be run by different individuals, even backup/clone of the first to do it, which
could "take over" if a given host/network goes down.
