I have another question while setting up my Synchronet instance to work as a Fido Node: Do I need to get, install and configure a "Frontend Mailer" and if so, which one would be the preferred when it comes to hosting Synchronet on an Ubuntu machine?

Synchronet comes with a FidoNet mailer called BinkIt. I recommend you use it: https://wiki.synchro.net/howto:fidonet
