    What is what? Syslog? Windows?

    Can Synchronet for Windows send its log data to a syslog server on
    another machine, and if not, would you add this feature?

    What is "external syslog" for Windows?

    Can Synchronet for Windows send its log data to a syslog server on

    I'm not aware of any syslog support on Windows (i.e. by Microsoft). Synchronet can log to the NT System Events on Windows (that's what Synchronet ntsvcs do), but I've seen nothing in the Windows APIs regarding syslog. But you seem to know all about this, so please educate me.

    i think that mean that send the logs events via network to another
    syslog server, as some routers that can do it.

    the logger unix command do this tanks

    logger -s your.syslog.server -t sbbs "this is a message from remote"

    syslog use 514 upd port

    Wow.

    My first instinct is to just say "never mind".

    ...

    Syslog is a service that can be installed on any operating system if
    someone bothers to write a server for it. Most Unix-like operating
    systems have it as part of the default install.

    There are Windows syslog servers. I know, because I've bought them,
    written them, and am running a custom one written entirely in Perl right
    now.

    Syslog CLIENTS can write to the local syslog, and/or send data to a
    syslog service running on a different machine.

    There is a [Unix] section in sbbs.ini:

    [UNIX]
    ; User/group name to run as
    ;User=admin
    ;Group=wheel
    ; Run in background:
    Daemonize=False
    ; File to create/write-to with process identifier (when daemonized)
    PidFile=/var/run/sbbs.pid
    ; System log (syslog) facility to use (when daemonized)
    ; 1 = LOCAL1
    ; 2 = LOCAL2
    ; .
    ; .
    ; .
    ; S = Use standard facilities - be sure you understand the
    ; consequences of enabling this!
    ; man syslog.conf(5) for more information.
    ; Defaults to using the USER facility.
    LogFacility=User
    ; syslog identity to use (when daemonized)
    LogIdent=synchronet
    ; Default file creation mask:
    umask=077

    This led me to believe that the *nix version of Synchronet could log to
    the LOCAL syslog service and that you were more familiar with syslogging.

    I was asking if you'd consider adding support for sending logs to a
    syslog server on a different machine. I run the Windows version of Synchronet, and my syslog server is on a different machine as it
    services multiple computers/servers.

    I apologize if I assumed too much.

    Me too.

    This led me to believe that the *nix version of Synchronet could log to
    the LOCAL syslog service and that you were more familiar with syslogging.

    The *nix version of Synchronet uses the syslog() POSIX function to send log messages to a local logging subsystem (e.g. syslog/rsyslogd).

    "syslog() generates a log message, which will be distributed by syslogd(8)."

    I'm no syslog expert, but I believe you can configure a system logger to forward messages to loggers on other systems.

    "Rsyslogd is a system utility providing support for message logging. Support of both internet and unix domain sockets enables this utility to support both local and remote logging."

    I'm not familiar with use of syslog from Windows applictions/servers/services.

    I apologize if I assumed too much.

    Apology accepted.

    There are quite a number of Windows programs that send messages to
    syslog (ie TitanFTP), though many of them are considered "Enterprise" software.

    Any program on any platform can send syslog messages to a syslog server.
    That's kind of the point of having one, especially in a mixed OS environment. Basic clients are simple to implement, although I've been

    I have used external syslog in the past, but only Linux - Linux. I'm
    not aware
    of any syslog implementation for Windows, but I could be wrong. :)

    you can use cygwin

    There are a number of Windows syslog servers.. Try Googling "Windows
    Syslog Server".

    Kiwi and Visual Syslog Server come to mind.

    I'm no syslog expert, but I believe you can configure a system logger
    to forward messages to loggers on other systems.

    It's been years, but yes - you can specify a remote host by putting
    @hostname in the destination in syslogd.conf.
