• Error with Telnet Server

From Dream Master@VERT/CIAD to All on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 18:40:07
    Good day!

I noticed when recycling SBBS, I've noticed the following error message in the syslog output:

term 0008 !ERROR 98 binding Telnet Server socket to port 23: Address already in use
erm 0008 !ERROR 13 binding Telnet Server socket to port 23: Permission denied

This is on the latest Git build of SBBS for Linux.

Condition: systemctl restart sbbs - Above error occurs.
Condition: systemctl stop sbbs - Above error does not occur.

Linux kernel is 4.14.209-160.335.amzn2.x86_64. This is an EC2 instance on AWS.

    I'm definitely open to suggestions.

    Best regards,
    Dream Master

I asked DM the same question, he said it's not default to stop the unwary

So that new sysops aren't surprised when running sbbs clobbers their sshd or apache (e.g.) servers.

Wait, I can't believe I missed that one. I had a feeling it was a rebind problem. I should've researched it more before posting my query. Oh well, goes to show I've been a little "sleepy" behind the keyboard. Thank you for pointing it out.

My daily life involves dealing with *nix-based operating systems. When I come home (okay, when I move from my desk to the couch), the last thing I want to do is get onto the computer. Right now, thing are slow, nothing on television, I might actually be able to get my damn BBS fully up and running--again.

That sounds eerlily similar to myself at this point... I've started to
find some motivation in my down time to start working on things again,
but it's a hard build up. I work on software development at work and
don't often have the motivation to work on my own projects (including

I have about half a dozen projects (3 bbs related) that I'm in various

Haha, yeah, no. I've been Dream Master since 1989. Originally stuck as dreamastr on systems that only supported 9 character handles / usernames. Rob (digital man) can easily vouch for me on this one. Hell, I traded an unlimited licensed copy that I purchased of Wildcat! for Synchronet (250 node count, if I recall) back in 1991 or 1992. It was the best decision I ever made.

Anyway, Mr. MRO, I think you and I had this same conversation about a year ago when there was another Dream Master or similar that was on DOVE-Net. Trust me, I'm not changing.

Professionally, I am a cloud / systems architect. To this day, I have no idea what that means. I've managed people, managed systems, hell, I barely manage myself. My largest environmnet I ran was +20,000 servers with a good majority of them being Linux-based and about +20PB of storage. I decided to take a mental break of running a global environment and now responsible for an entire *nix-based enviornment and avoiding storage management (but, that may end up coming my direction eventually).

Right now I am trying to get my system up and running. As I recently discovered that SRE/BRE doesn't like 64-bit environments and dosemu is worthless for them, I'm now spending my time re-learning all the fun stuff I tossed away in my head some years ago. :|

Thank you, I'm here all week. In all honesty, I've given up on titles. Corporations will say whatever they want to say about a given profession. For example, when I first started at my last company (that would be twenty-one years ago), I was a Senior Programmer Analyst. What the hell is that? My understanding was that they looped mainframe programmers in with Windows and *nix systems administrators. As time went on, they changed my title to "Systems Integration Analyst" and the different promotion titles (Senior, Specialist, Principal, etc.), then, when they ran out of that, they decided to say, "Okay, what would you like to be called?" I finally said, "God!" That didn't take. So, my title went like this, and I'm not joking:

    Lead Cloud Platform Architect
    Lead Principal Systems Integration Analyst
    Lead Systems and Storage Architect

I literally had three titles!!! At one point I said, "Fuck it!" and referred myself as the first but found that in non-cloud communities it loses its luster. So, I use each when necessary. Now, I'm happy with "Senior Engineer".

I think the name "mro" is supposed to be "Mr. O", but as a single word without punctuation or anything, the name "mro" can be a bit ambiguous whether it's supposed to be "Mr. O" or a single word pronounced "murrow" or something.

I think the name "mro" is supposed to be "Mr. O", but as a single word without punctuation or anything, the name "mro" can be a bit ambiguous whether it's supposed to be "Mr. O" or a single word pronounced "murrow" or something.

Assuming that's a 64-bit edition of Windows, that would be true for all 16-bit DOS programs then.

Of course there is this, but I haven't tried it yet: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/ntvdmx64.html

I knew what I was getting myself into and was hopeful our friends that made BRE/SRE would've done some positive porition. Instead, I'll be dicking with dosemu tomorrow. Yay me!

Do you have a attacks since port 23 is a common port? I assign all my ports above 2024 except for mail and the web.

You might want to assign your telnet port to prevent any abuse issues.
