i've lived in areas like this. it's not really great. don't know
what you mean by 'high street', though.
It depends.
I think living in a village with 200 population tops (in the most
active season) is nice, the only thing you are losing is services
- stuff like cinemas and the like - but if you don't need to deal
with a homeowner association, that alone is a big win in my book.
I mean, I used to live in a condo when I was a kid and I always
woke up cold in the mornings because the community could not agree
on a schedule to turn the house heating on and off. Now I can burn
as much wood in the fireplace as I like or as much oil as I can
afford.
i lived in a small town and everything closed early. the only good food was at the bowling alley. the police were predatory on everyone about speeding or whatever.

That is the problem right there XD
Here, it is too small to have any store at all, so nothing closes
early. There is no police station or presence at all either, which
is absolutely glorious because you can drive your unlicensed
tractor or whatever and nobody will pester you about it.
