• Sysop count

Been a while since the last count, so here it is ...

    Z1 298
    Z2 528
    Z3 19
    Z4 23

These are unique sysop-names, not the number of nodes.

Depending on the counting method it may be off a few nodes, but nothing which would change this reality dramatically.

My guess is that even in those numbers there's a pile of dead wood ...

Almost every test of connectivity shows there is plenty of dead wood, depending on the net or region being tested...

    Hi Stas,

Running a script gives false information ... An example ...

    Zone 1 has 346 sysops.
    Hold 6
    Down 25

Hold and Down are thrown out ... that reduces the number already to 315.

Then we have doubles such as

    Terry_Barlow 15
    Tj_Barlow 8

    Same person

    New_SysOp 4
    Nobody 3
    new_sysop 3
    New_Fido_SysOp 20

There's a Geoff and Geoffrey or Jeff somewhere.

Plus I'm aware of identical people running several entries with different names and getting away with it. That goes for Z2 as well.

The fact is that my counting is very conservative because there are many non-node entries in the nodelist ... and dead wood. The reality is a lot worse.

Plus the nodelist is full of nonsense ... check the latest Z2DAILY and you will find 300 new entries with "New_Sysop" in a particular net.

2:20/0 RC20 (for FTN reasons -- actually rather useless...)
2:203/0 NC203 (the central hub for all mail in R20)
2:203/2 My BBS #1 (this one)
2:203/208 My BBS #2 (oldest BBS in the world, still operational)

The last entry doesn't show up, because one of the letters in my name is replaced somewhere on the line ('allow8bit 0' in MAKENL.CTL).

There's a Geoff and Geoffrey or Jeff somewhere.

How can I know for sure that they are not different people?

Plus I'm aware of identical people running several entries with

    Unfortunately, we cannot verify this.

The fact is that my counting is very conservative because there are

Of course, in such a situation, automatic calculation will be even more optimistic. It seems to me that the main question is how important the actual nodelist is for us.

According to P4, in order to join Fidonet, you're supposed to set your
mailer to use a /9999 address in your region and send a netmail application
to the RC - it's a way of proving that you're capable of running a mailer.

I've had some of the new nodes in my region send netmail, the others came through an email sent by a web page application. I'd say 25% of the
web/email applicants never poll for their first packet.

The only problems caused are the endless whining from the "nodelist police" and other passive-aggressive unnecessary digs at zone 1 going on for quite

Yessir... which I never see the "nodelist police" ever complain about. Just those entries in this zone.

It began long ago with nonstop comments about RC15, then screaming murder about a duplicate net, and really just a tone of voice and little remarks I
did not appreciate. After careful thought, it was decided that the most appropriate response was to put on a big smile and wave the middle-finger.

Net 229 may or may not clean itself up if and when the effeminate whining stops. And not by idle threats by Bjerk or increased whining from the self-appointed nodelist police.
