05 August 1957 - COMIC STRIP "ANDY CAPP" MAKES ITS DEBUT: Andy is a orking-class figure who never actually works, living in Hartlepool, a
harbour town in County Durham, in North East England. The title of the
strip is a pun on the local pronunciation of "handicap"; and the surname "Capp" signifies how Andy's cap always covered his eyes along with, metaphorically, his vision in life. Handicap (horse racing) and
handicapping, in sport and games, is part of betting, a favourite
    activity of Andy Capp.

Andy's hobbies and activities include pigeon racing, darts, snooker
(his cue's name is "Delilah"[5]), playing football (which always
involves fights with the other players, and frequently ends with Andy
being sent off), occasional cricket and rugby, betting on horses (and
usually losing badly), getting drunk in the local pub (often falling
into the canal and being fished out by a constable, and usually
arriving home late as a result), ending up in the local jail, fishing
(and not catching anything bigger than a goldfish), unsuccessfully
mooching money from everyone for beer, unsuccessfully flirting with
barmaids (also yelling at them when he is not served), attempting to
pick up (mostly young) bargirls (and being rejected usually due to his
age), loafing and napping on the sofa, playing poker (and usually
cheating with hidden cards, although plainly seen by the readers), and fighting with his long-suffering wife Florrie (also known as "Flo"),
as well as being served burnt food by her.

05 SEPTEMBER 1957 - SAL AND DEAN HIT THE ROAD IN A BOLD BEAT MANIFESTO:
Reading more like a prose poem than a novel, the 320-page semiauto- biographical work published today journeys across sunbaked tarmacs to
define the ethos of the Beat Generation. The rambling, stream-of-
consciousness travelogue, 'On the Road,' will also launch author
Jack Kerouac into the literary stratosphere.

    Title: Salt & Pepper Shrimp
    Categories: Seafood, Vegetables, Chilies
    Yield: 4 Servings

    3/4 ts Very coarsely ground pepper;
    - Szechuan and white pepper
    - preferred, but any non
    - black peppercorns are fine
    1/2 ts Coarse salt
    1/4 c Peanut oil
    2 tb Cornstarch
1 lb Shrimp; thawed if frozen
    1 ts Fine chopped garlic
1 ts (to 3 ts) seeded, minced
    - serrano chile

Courtesy of Tom Douglas; Etta's in Seattle, WA

Put the pepper in a small saut++ pan over medium heat and
toast it, shaking the pan almost constantly. Cook the
pepper for about 3 minutes, remove it from the heat and
combine it with the salt. Set aside.

In a wok or large frying pan, heat the peanut oil over a
    hot flame.

As the oil heats up, toss the shrimp in the cornstarch and
shake off any excess. When the oil is very hot (but not
smoking), add the shrimp and cook them 2-3 minutes,
tossing them a few times so they cook evenly. When cooked
through, use a large spatula to hold the shrimp in place
as you empty as much oil as possible from the frying pan
or wok. Return the shrimp to the heat, add the salt and
pepper mixture, the garlic, and the peppers. Cook about 1
minute, tossing constantly so shrimp are infused with
    flavor.

05 August 1957 - PHILADELPHIA'S DANCE SHOW DEBUTS ON NATIONWIDE TV: A low-budget show featuring dancing teens and lip-syncing musical acts is
a hit on local Philadelphia stations, and now "American Bandstand" makes
its US network debut on ABC. The show, with its host Dick Clark, will
prove popular and enduring, lasting another 32 years.

Clark regularly asked teenagers their opinions of the songs being
played, through the "Rate-a-Record" segment. During the segment, two
audience members each ranked two records on a scale of 35 to 98, after
which their two opinions were averaged by Clark, who then asked the
chosen members to justify their scores. The segment gave rise to the catchphrase "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it." In one
humorous segment broadcast for years on retrospective shows, comedians
Cheech and Chong appeared as the record raters.

Featured artists typically performed their current hits by lip-syncing
to the released version of the song.

04 September 1957 - "E DAY' ARRIVES AS THE EDSEL IS ROLLED OUT FOR PUBLIC VIEW: After months of revved-up publicity, Ford Motor Company
debuts a new car, but clever Madison Avenue ad campaigns won't be able to save the ill-fated auto. A combo of bad design choices and screwy mechanics dooms the Edsel to low sales, and the name itself will become a byword for overhyped failures.

Edsel is a discontinued division and brand of automobiles that was marketed by the Ford Motor Company from the 1958 to the 1960 model years. Deriving its name from Edsel Ford, son of company founder Henry Ford, Edsels were developed in an effort to give Ford a fourth brand to gain additional market share from Chrysler and General Motors. Established as an expansion of the Lincoln-Mercury Division to three brands (re-christened the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division), Edsel shared a price range with Mercury; the division shared its bodies with both Mercury and Ford.

Competing against Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Dodge, and DeSoto, Edsel was the first new brand introduced by an American automaker since the 1939 launch of Mercury and 1956 launch of Continental, which ended and merged into Lincoln after 1957. In the year leading to its release, Ford invested in an advertising campaign, marketing Edsels as the cars of the future. While 1958 Edsels introduced multiple advanced features for the price segment, the launch of the model line became symbolic of commercial failure. Introduced in a recession that catastrophically affected sales of medium-priced cars, Edsels were considered overhyped, unattractive (distinguished by a vertical grille), and low quality.

Following a loss of over $250 million ($2.47 billion in 2022 dollars) on development, manufacturing, and marketing on the model line, Ford quietly discontinued the Edsel brand before 1960.
