    Title: Grover Cleveland Parsnip Fritter
    Categories: Five, Vegetables, Herbs
    Yield: 14 servings

    16 oz Parsnips; peeled, trimmed
    - in 2" lengths, thick
    - rounds halved lengthwise
    Salt
    2 ts A-P flour
    1 lh Egg; beaten
    2 pn Fresh grated nutmeg
2 tb Lard, turkey fat or unsalted butter
    - more as needed

Place the parsnips in a medium saucepan with salted
water to cover, bring to a boil and cook until the
parsnips are tender, about 8 minutes. Drain in a
    colander.

Transfer the parsnips to a large mixing bowl. Use a fork
or potato masher to press the parsnips into a coarse
mash, discarding any sections that are tough and woody.
The yield is about 2 cups.

Stir in the flour, egg, salt to taste and the nutmeg, if
using, and stir to combine well.

Line a large plate with several layers of paper towels.

Heat the lard, turkey fat or butter in a large skillet
over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the
parsnip mixture 1 spoonful at a time, pressing down on
it to form a round patty about 2 inches in diameter.
Work in batches so as not to crowd the skillet. Cook
until the patties are golden brown, about 2 minutes,
then turn them over and cook until golden brown on the
    second side, about 2 minutes.

Transfer the cooked fritters to the paper towels to
drain. Repeat to fry all of the batter, adding fat as
    needed. Serve the fritters warm.

    Yield: Makes two-inch fritters

20 July 1969 - ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND AS ARMSTRONG WALKS ON MOON:
NASA's Apollo 11 Lunar Module lands 238,855 miles from Earth in the Sea
of Tranquility and six hours later astronaut Neil Armstrong exits the
vehicle, descends a short ladder, and becomes the first human to walk
on the moon. Minutes later, astronaut Buzz Aldrin will join Armstrong
on the surface. Millions back home tune in to the historic event.

UDD NOTE: Contrary to popular belief the first communication spoken
from the surface of the moon was "Contact light" by Neil Armstrong.

    Followed by "Shutdown". Armstrong again.

    "413 is on". Aldrin

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed." Armstrong

The first word spoken by a human standing on the surface of the moon
were "It's some sort of powdery stuff." Followed by the set-piece where Armstrong declaims "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind." He was supposed to say "a man" but in my tape which I
recorded live off-the-air he elided the "a". Sadly the reel to reel
tape was ruined in my mid 1980s house fire.

08 February 1969 - LAST EDITION OF SATURDAY EVENING POST: In 1968,
Martin Ackerman, a specialist in troubled firms, became president of
Curtis after lending it $5 million. Although at first he said there were
no plans to shut down the magazine, soon he halved its circulation,
purportedly in an attempt to increase the quality of the audience, and
then subsequently did shut it down. In announcing that the February 8,
1969, issue would be the magazine's last, Curtis executive Martin
Ackerman stated that the magazine had lost $5 million in 1968 and would
lose a projected $3 million in 1969. In a meeting with employees after
the magazine's closure had been announced, Emerson thanked the staff for
their professional work and promised "to stay here and see that everyone
    finds a job".

At a March 1969 post-mortem on the magazine's closing, Emerson stated
that The Post "was a damn good vehicle for advertising" with competitive renewal rates and readership reports and expressed what The New York
Times called "understandable bitterness" in wishing "that all the
one-eyed critics will lose their other eye"

28 June 1969 - GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT BEGINS AT THE STONEWALL INN: Patrons of a Greenwich Village gay bar have had enough of police harassment and they fight back when another raid begins at the Stonewall Inn. The ensuing riot and uprising will galvanize the gay community across America and be marked as the start of the gay civil rights movement.

As was common for American gay bars at the time, the Stonewall Inn was owned by the Mafia. While police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, officers quickly lost control of the situation at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969. Tensions between New York City Police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening and again several nights later. Within weeks, Village residents organized into activist groups demanding the right to live openly regarding their sexual orientation, and without fear of being arrested. The new activist organizations concentrated on confrontational tactics, and within months three newspapers were established to promote rights for gay men and lesbians.

A year after the uprising, to mark the anniversary on June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Within a few years, gay rights organizations were founded across the US and the world. Today, LGBT Pride events are held annually worldwide in June in honor of the Stonewall riots.

    Yield: 4 servings

    1 cl Garlic; halved
1 1/2 lb Mixed white, yellow, purple,
    - red and sweet potatoes;
    - peeled if desired. in 1"
    - pieces
    Salt & fresh ground pepper
    2 ts Chopped fresh sage
3 tb Extra virgin olive oil
    1/4 c Parmesan; grated

    Set the oven @ 425+#F/218+#C.

Rub a 2 or 3 quart baking dish or gratin with the cut
side of the garlic and then brush with olive oil.
Alternatively, line a sheet pan with parchment and omit
the garlic. Place the potatoes in a large bowl. Season
to taste with salt and pepper, add the sage and 2
tablespoons of the olive oil and toss again. Arrange in
the baking dish or on the baking sheet.

Bake 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. If you are
using a baking dish the some of the potatoes might
stick, but just coax them away from the dish with your
    spoon.

Add the remaining oil and the cheese if using, stir
together and bake another 10 minutes, until the potatoes
are crispy on the edges. Serve hot or warm.

    Hello Dave,

28 June 1969 - GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT BEGINS AT THE STONEWALL INN: Patrons of a
Greenwich Village gay bar have had enough of police harassment and they fight back when another raid begins at the Stonewall Inn. The ensuing riot and uprising will galvanize the gay community across America and be marked as the start of the gay civil rights movement.

    BULL FUCKING SHIT!

For generations, New Orleans has been known as a welcoming, inclusive destination for all. Including gays and lesbians. Ever been to the
French Quarter? I have. Many times. So have many others. Of all colors
and stripes, regardless of sexual orientation.

This past month, the city of New Orleans honored the victims and
families of the 1973 Upstairs Lounge arson. Dozens of innocent people
were killed in that fire, along with many others scarred for life.
This was one of the most tragic days ever in the French Quarter,
one of the worst crimes ever against the LGBTQ+ community.

Please do not tell me the gay rights movement began at the Stonewall
Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. This is clearly not true, as
nobody died that day, and nobody else scarred for life. You did not
see victims of a fire started by an arsonist being carted into Charity Hospital, some of them dead and others dying. You did not see a priest
on the second floor of the bar in flames with his hands on the bars
of the outside window, being trapped inside. What a horrible sight
to see. A priest, there to minister to the gays and lesbians inside,
being a victim himself. Along with those who perished.

Have you ever experienced the smell of death? The sight of rotting
flesh is bad enough. The smell is far worse. A smell one can never
forget. And the sounds. The sounds of men and women screaming as
they are rolled in on carts, not even being able to tell if they
are men or they are women.

Travel unites. It is a force for good.

According to SAP CONCUR, 97% of the LGBTQs community are worried
about their safety and discrimination when traveling.

And you, Dave Drum, have the gall to say the gay rights movement
began at the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village. You are ignorant,
    to say the least.

As was common for American gay bars at the time, the Stonewall Inn was owned
    by the Mafia.

So now you make this out to be a hit piece suggesting gays and
    lesbians inside deserved to die.

ESAD. That is what you, Dave Drum, is telling the LGBTQ community.

    Why am I not surprised?

    [..]

    Donald Trump doesn't care.
    MAGA nutjobs don't care.
    Dave Drum doesn't care.
    Sean Dennis doesn't care.
    Mike Powell doesn't care.
A lot of other folks don't care.

If they did, they would join the community.

Am I right? Or am I wrong?

Please. Prove me wrong. I dare you.

No wonder almost nobody in the LGBTQ+ community feels safe anywhere.

    For Life,
    Lee
