WOMEN'S ARMY AUXILIARY CORPS CREATED: Proposed by Congresswoman Edith
Rogers, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps is created so volunteers can
perform non-combat jobs as mechanics, clerks, drivers, and more. Around 150,000 women will serve in the WAAC, later renamed the Women's Army
Corps. The WAC will be disbanded in 1978 when all-female and all-male
    units are integrated.

26 November, 1942 - RICK'S CAFÉ AMÉRICAIN OPENS ITS DOORS AS 'CASABLANCA' PREMIERES: At its premiere, few involved in the production expect
'Casablanca' to cause much of a stir, despite its star power in
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. But the film will go into wide distribution in January, and as time goes by, its characters, theme
song, and dialogue will go on to reach iconic status.

    * Pearl couscous is much larger than regular couscous
and takes longer to cook, so don't be tempted to
    substitute one for the other.

Pearl couscous may be labeled Israeli couscous or ptitim
    in Middle Eastern markets.

26 May 1942 - THE FIRST BLACK AMERICAN TO BE AWARDED THE NAVY CROSS:
    Doris Miller (October 12, 1919 - November 24, 1943) was a United States
Navy cook second class who was killed in action during World War II.
He was the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the
highest decoration for valor presented by the US Navy, and the second
highest in the United States after the Medal of Honor.

Miller served aboard the battleship West Virginia, which was sunk by
Japanese torpedo bombers during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941. During the attack, he helped several sailors who were wounded, and while manning an anti-aircraft machine gun for which he had
no training, he shot down 4-6 Japanese planes. Miller's actions earned
him the medal, and the resulting publicity for Miller in the Black press
made him an iconic emblem of the fight for civil rights for Black
Americans. In November 1943, Miller was killed while serving aboard the
escort carrier Liscome Bay when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine
during the Battle of Makin in the Gilbert Islands.

The destroyer escort/Knox-class frigate USS Miller (reclassified as a
frigate in June 1975), in service from 1973 to 1991, was named after
him. On January 19, 2020, the Navy announced that a Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier, CVN-81, would be named after Miller.
The ship is scheduled to be laid down in 2026 and launched in 2029.

7 June 1942 - MAJOR DEFEAT IN THE PACIFIC FOR THE JAPANESE NAVY: A
ferocious three-day battle a thousand miles west of Hawaii ends in a
rout of the Japanese navy by an underestimated American defense. Pearl
Harbor is partly avenged on its six-month anniversary, and the Battle
of Midway turns the tide towards Allied victory in the Pacific.

The U.S. Navy under Admirals Chester W. Nimitz, Frank J. Fletcher, and
Raymond A. Spruance defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese
Navy under Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto, Chuichi Nagumo, and Nobutake Kondo
north of Midway Atoll, inflicting devastating damage on the Japanese
fleet. Military historian John Keegan called it "the most stunning and
decisive blow in the history of naval warfare"
