• sleep tracker smartwatches.. anyone?

From August Abolins@1:153/757.21 to All on Saturday, May 28, 2022 23:38:00
Anyone here have one of those smartwatches that is primarily
designed as a fitness tracker and sleep tracker?

On a whim while visiting an electronics shop for something
else, one particular type of watch was on display for $55CDN.
Sleep tracking was an included feature. Recently, I have been
curious about monitoring my own sleep after a friend of mine
started sharing the screenshots of the results from a
Fitbit(tm). A Fitbit is clearly beyond my price range, but the
ones in the electronics shop seemed reasonable to try.

The one I have is the ID205L. It's corresponding "app" is
    Letsfit(tm).

It's a reasonable device for the price, but sleep tracking
seems to be skewed and/or limited to recording from 3a to 7a
only! :( I'm wondering if anyone else is familiar with such a
    problem.

The device has a sleep "range" that I can specify and confirm.
The default was/is 11p-7a. That was fine and I left it that
way. But the sleep record only seems to kick in closer to 3a
each time. Two recordings for the last two nights were like
that. Total sleep time recorded was 3hrs 50min or 4hr 30min,
    which makes no sense!

Meanwhile, I've set the device for a sleep range of 6p-7a. Not
sure if that will make a difference in the logging period.

Since then, I'v studied the important concerns on how to wear
one of things properly. Hoping that there will be a difference

Anyone familiar with the ID205L? Many companies seem to re-
brand the device with different names.

I still use a FitBit Flex 2. I wear a traditional watch on my non-dominant wrist, and the flex on my dominant wrist. I think the term I read was
"polite computing", where technology is there to assist without being disruptive.

It's got 5 LEDs and a vibration feature. If you tap it, it'll tell you how what fraction of your step count you've met so far. It'll vibrate to wake
you silently, to remind you to move every hour, and when you get a text message. Otherwise, it's unobtrusive.

It also tracks sleep pretty well, although it doesn't do heart rate
monitoring and can't track what level of sleep you're in.

I'll be sad when it dies, they haven't made them for a couple of years.

I had the Fitbit One for several years. I liked it because it was a step counter that wasn't on your wrist, you could clip it to your belt or the inside of a pocket and was basically out of the way.

When it came time to track sleep you used a soft wrist band and placed the Fitbit One into that on your non-dominant wrist. It had a small OLED screen and one button on it to show you your steps, stairs climbed, etc. I liked
the sleep tracking feature, though I'm not sure I got much out of it.

I really like the alarm clock feature of it, since you were wearing it on
your wrist it could vibrate when it was time to wake you up and be less
    likely to disturb your partner.

I'll be sad when it dies, they haven't made them for a couple of
    years.

That's what happened to mine, the battery no longer held a charge, and it wasn't user replaceable. Now I have the Apple Watch, but it's much too bulky to wear to bed.

How long is "several years"? It's a shame that a perfectly
good device has to declare end-of-life just because of the
    internal battery.

I have an iPod 2nd gen 8GB that holds a charge for almost 2
weeks on standby and occassional use. Conversely, I have a
newer 4th gen 32GB that barely lasts a 7 days on standby.

I think I got about 3.5 years out of it, not too bad, but you're right that it's a shame that a device needs to be recycled just because the battry no longer holds a charge.

I liked that it was on my hip as it seemed more actuate for step counting. I remember trying out a wrist mounted one around that time and got about 200 steps just for typing an email.

I wanted to buy another one but by then they had discontinued that model in favour of the new wrist mounted models.

That being said, my Apple watch seems to be pretty accurate for a wrist mounted step counter.

The ID205L (letsfit) watch-style is surprisingly accurate.
There are about 28 to 32 steps from my desk at the front of the
shop to the coffee machine at the back depending on what floor
display I navigate around. The watch gets it right each and
    every time.

That being said, my Apple watch seems to be pretty
accurate for a wrist mounted step counter.

I'm not familiar with the Apple watches.. but are they strictly
watches then? (ie. no fitness tracking at all?)

They all do some form of health tracking. Mine (Series 5) has a heart rate monitor, ECG, step counting. Newer versions also have blood oxygen sensors as well.

They also have "Fall Detection" so if you fall & pass out it can automatically call emergency services. It can also warn you if you're around loud noises too long which could damage hearing. There also mindfulness reminders and of course the sleep tracking.

On top of that, I have my debit & credit card on my watch so I can just tap that to pay for things. All-in-all a pretty handy device.

A friend has volunteered to swap watches/trackers with me for
about 4 days. We'll see if he gets the same 2:30-7a-ONLY sleep
record with the ID205L that I did.

Meanwhile, I'll be wearing a Fitbit Charge 4. Ret. $149.

I tried that one for a short time after, I think it was called the Fitbit Zip here. It was around the time they were having some bluetooth issues with iPhones and would drain the battery in about a week. It's probably fixed by now, but replacing a coin battery once a week certainly did seem wasteful.

I've never looked beyond Fitbit for these things. There is
certainly quite a huge variety of makers, re-branders, and
    designs.

Amazfit also makes one called the Neo that looks like an
old-school Casio watch but still does notification, step
    tracking and alarms.

I had a "real" Casio at one time. Back then, the hourly chime
seemed like a cool feature to keep me focused and aware of the
    time.

I stopped wearing watches over 12 years ago. Since my little
foray into fitness trackers, now I remember why. I simply got
tired of the strangled feeling of wearing a rubberized band,
and any bulkiness of a watch that scrapes and damages a shirt
    cuff.

Since lockdowns, I've let my hair grow. I can probably fashion

I have an app on my pone that's been doing a decent job of monitoring my sleep as to awake/asleep times & disturbances (it keeps track of depth of sleep)

It's called "Sleep Cycle"; I actually downloaded it because it's an alarm that brings you out of dep sleep slowly, with extremely low volume music/tone, increasing only as you ease upwards from deepest sleep -- the idea being not to shock your poor system out of deepest rest.

It does a wonderful job of this, but also, as an extra feature, provides a sleep report each morning, & a monthly summary.

My CPAP also monitors my sleep. specific to respiration.

I find it a handy app. I've kept the daily reports for a couple years now -- one day, when bored I might put them all into a database & graph things to see what shows up. .
