Perhaps the echo is little used for its intended purpose, then.

OTOH, my N640C is an ex-sysop (and ex-NC) from Zone 6. There's another ex-Zone 6 refugee listed in Net633. So, the potential is there. There may be others, lurking...

The echo dates back to Z6 (former zone) and though we rarely see any posters from Asia anymore, randomly 1 or 2 pop up in Z3 (where the remainder of Z6 voted to move to when we couldn't sustain Z6 any longer).

It's always been a chatty echo and a freindly one. Lots of tech talk too and folks test things here too. Telegram users here too but we don't see many.

We do stay out of politics as it's got several ther echos that can be used for that.

I use it on a modest Blackberry Q10 (Android 4.3) myself. The
screen is not ideal for incoming originally wide lines (the
body of the text tends to honour the presence of hard CRs., and
the since the screen is a perfect 2"x2" square, there is no
landscape-view option. However, I understand that smartphones
with 16:9 screens can be tilted horizontally to get a better
representation of some messages that arrive in the original 70-
    80char per line form.

And.. I also use the desktop version which I find is the
easiest way to produce a reply.

None of that should matter. What does matter is the word wrapping upon display. I note that in the case of the original it appears to hardwrap at 72 characters which I believe goes back to the teletype days ... either that or line printers, although I doubt that since there were many printers back then that could do much more than 80 characters nevermind 72.

However, I understand that smartphones with 16:9 screens can be
tilted horizontally to get a better representation of some
messages that arrive in the original 70-80char per line form.

With the default font, an android based tablet can handle 80 character width on both portrait and landscape modes (16:9). I imagine the same can be said for smartphones and other handheld devices.

And.. I also use the desktop version which I find is the
easiest way to produce a reply.

Proper word wrapping would be required to convince me. I have a tablet that can produce proper MSGs that is entirely capable of both displaying and creating MSGs that does this the correct way without ANY changes to standards ... or worse; goofy kludges that create more problems and solve absolutely nothing.

ALthough FidoNet is not as popular as in the 20s anymore and I really do understand that people who actually still use it would love to see more

Lately, I thought that reviving FidoNet especially in the eastern reagion of Zone 2 would allow people from respective countries to communicate with the "outside" world bypassing their governments' control over the internet.

R)eplies from the Telegram side by only quoting as far back as
the 3rd level, and not anything higher.

It would be nice to have CRs removed from the EOLs within a
paragraph so that the messages arriving from the Fido side

    Hey August!

I have not found a font-type or fontsize control on my Blackberry.
The lettering is already pretty small as it is. :(

No surprise there. On a google device there is a configure thingy which has a section called "Display". There are four font sizes to choose from on my particular device. I switched from default to the largest size but that didn't have any effect on the terminal (termux). I believe it requires it's own fonts.

In you case I am guessing that it is less than 72 characters given what you are saying about it. Also I am guessing that @Fido2telebot has a hardcoded wrap at 72 characters (1960's teletype machines). Judging by what I see at this end your msg's are fine but definetly look dated.

I'll look up all this stuff if anyone is interested but I doubt I'll ever use it other than for testing. I don't have much love for these so-called smart devices. To me they look like perfect targets for ye olde sledge hammer. :::evil grin:::

I am forcing a shorter than usual line-length with OpenXP.

There should be a CR after char 63 above.

I do this because then my own messages look nicer (not
haphazardly wrapped) when I look at them with Telegram on my
    Blackberry! ;)

I also find it easier to read line-lengths that closer resemble
the width of a printed page or newspaper column than the
totally free-flowed paragraphs that sometimes arrive here.

Even using the Telegram and Fido link-up just to get
notifications when a message has appeared in an echo is amusing
and handy. It permits taking a quick survey of the new arrival
to see if it needs a reply or not.

    Above is 64 wrapped.

I've been doing 72 wrapped for quotes. Also, these are 72 multibyte characters which when deployed are likely to get screwed up when doing bytewise wraps where one character = 1 byte. Hence my use of the word "dated".

Control characters were the reseved space. Teletype redates that so it is possible it has a relation but as best I know, the keypunch card is the one related to modern computer use of the 72 as the older teletype was more of an input expectation without frames expected?

One thing that I never understood about Z5 and Z6 demise is that at least here, in Latin America, we have a strong retrocomputing community, so every now and then someone from our glorious past joins back to the family. Hey Carol!

Reference, 1983, A school in Navy. Also 1989-1995 A school
    instructor.

You have my (personal) reference beat as it goes back to a first year university computer science class back around 1973-ish. I definetly don't recall there being line lengths in punch card production. What I do recall from that time is me promising myself to never have anything to do with computers after that experience. I lived up to that promise until the late 1980s and by that time there were no punch cards to be seen, thank goodness. Nine track tapes were just starting to be phased out around then. In fact it was the act of porting data from nine track to exabyte (external scsii on a sparc2 to a networked nine track drive) that prompted me to learn c and unix. ftp became my game with a tad of telnet thrown in. That was just before running across fidonet.

    Life is good,
    Maurice

No, the packet radio was not. It was also looked at in Rumania (I think it was there).

It used to be. I suspect that, like on another network I used to be on,
the Asian nodes dried up and/or quit participating and, as a result, the
    "link" was broken.

If she can find a BBS in Thailand that is willing to carry this echo, then

I can speak to Z6. When I left, I had no one able (or if able, willing) to keep it going. We voted to move to Z3 so did that. I transitioned 8 members (I think it was that) to a net in southern Z3 who had the right connectivity under a good NC of the time, then moved stateside again. Russel Teidt was left with less to work with and finally tossed in the towel.
